Blog from October, 2025

Effective October 7th, 2025, REDCap projects in development are limited to a maximum of 50 test records. This means that when a project in development reaches 50 records, no new test records can be added to the project. For any projects in development with more than 50 records when the limit went into effect, all test records will remain in the project but no new test records can be added.

Study teams can find the number of test records entered during development tracked on the Add/Edit Records page and Data Import Tool page. See screenshots below for an example of the messages displayed when under the limit, and when the limit has been met. We recommend that study teams with development projects near the 50-record limit consider deleting any unnecessary test records to free up space under the limit so they can continue to create new test records.

Please reach out to the REDCap Team with any questions or concerns about the test record limit for projects in development at redcap@ohsu.edu.

REDCap Project Building Starts with Planning. OCTRI can help you make a plan.

The REDCap team is piloting a new service, called REDCap Jumpstart: Project Planning, the goal of which is to help research teams accelerate their planning process by:

  • Identifying the key REDCap concepts and functionality that apply to setting up their project to meet their data collection requirements
  • Highlighting the key considerations to address in developing a project setup and design road map.

Who is eligible:

  • This service is being piloted for funded research projects.
  • Study teams must have requested and created their projects in REDCap using the Standard Support for Research Support track.
  • The project PI and builder/point person must be able to commit to attending a 1-hour session and responding to a short post-encounter survey.

Student lead projects, non-research projects, unfunded research projects, and projects using the Self-Service for Research support track are not eligible

What will you gain:

  • Expert guidance on what features your project may benefit from
  • Help in creating a road map for project building and associated activities

Changes & Improvements

  • Form Display Logic

    • Form Display Logic (FDL) controls have been updated for more granular control.
      • You may now specify via checkboxes to apply FDL to data entry forms and auto-continue for surveys on a per-condition basis.
      • In previous versions of REDCap, the auto-continue for surveys control was a single checkbox near the top of the FDL page:
      • Now, the controls for applying to data entry forms or surveys with auto-continue can be set at each condition:
        • This provides the ability to apply FDL only to a data entry form, auto-continue for a survey, or both simultaneously.
  • Field Embedding

    • If a field has been embedded into the choice label of a multiple choice field, the variable name inside the curly brackets will be removed from reports, data exports, and piping text to improve readability.

  • Custom Record Status Dashboards

    • Aggregate smart variables and miscellaneous project-level smart variables can now be utilized in the description/instructions of Custom Record Status Dashboards.

  • Record Home Page - Repeating Instrument Table

    • On the Record Home Page, the REDCap will now remember your choice for the sort order of rows within the repeat instrument tables.
