Overview

Remote Desktop Gateway (RDG) allows authorized OHSU staff to remotely access an OHSU-managed Windows computer that is physically located on OHSU campus. Access is made with a Windows computer which has Remote Desktop Connection app installed.

Remote Desktop Gateway access is limited to ITG staff and pre-approved staff members only.

Before you start

  • You must have an active OHSU network account.
  • Your device must be connected to the internet.
  • Duo Mobile is required when connecting from outside the secure OHSU network.

Remote Desktop Gateway access requires Duo Mobile push, using an iOS or Android device that is enrolled in Duo Mobile. You cannot use Duo hardware security tokens and passcodes for completing multi-factor authentication.

  • Your computer must have Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection app installed.
  • You must have prior approval to use Remote Desktop Gateway.

If you need Remote Desktop Gateway access, submit an ITG Services Portal form through your department's IT Contact.

Reference: Troubleshoot connection issues

If you experience issues with making a Remote Desktop Gateway connection, check the following:

Remote OHSU-managed Windows computer is offline

Make sure that the on-campus OHSU-managed Windows computer is connected to the wired OHSU network. If you are unsure, contact the ITG Service Desk.

Connection timeout

Remote Desktop Gateway connections will time out and disconnect after 8 hours. Close the connection and reconnect.

Duo Mobile authentication and lockout

If you do not immediately respond to Duo Mobile push notifications (within a minute), the system fails to log in. Repeated login failures will result in a lockout.

Slow internet connections

Dropped or unsuccessful Remote Desktop Gateway may happen if your internet connection is slow.

Avoid using cellular-based 5G services

ITG recommends that employees avoid cellular-based 5G internet services, such as those offered by T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T. While this service may work for personal needs, it is not reliable enough for business purposes at OHSU. When using 5G home internet, employees may experience connectivity issues which would impede the ability to complete one’s essential duties.

ITG does not troubleshoot internet connectivity issues for any remote connections.

Diagnosing and troubleshooting connection issues for non-OHSU networks are responsibility of the customer.
